Sony has officially announced that the development process of its next-generation game console, PlayStation 6, has begun. The statement came during a presentation to investors by Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino.
Sony has started the development process of PlayStation 6
Nishino, while responding to a question about the future of cloud gaming, explained that physical consoles are still in a strong position and that work is being done on next-generation hardware. With this statement, the development process of PlayStation 6 has been directly confirmed by a senior executive for the first time.
Nishino reminded that they have been investing in cloud-based gaming solutions since the PS3 era, but stated that a large number of gamers still do not give up on physical consoles. Emphasizing that the wide user ecosystem formed between PS4 and PS5 is an important advantage for the company, Nishino said that the future of the PlayStation platform is a priority within the company’s strategies.
Sony had left a seven-year development gap between PS4 and PS5. If this schedule is maintained, it is possible that PS6 will be introduced in the last quarter of 2027. However, statements by Shuhei Yoshida, who was previously an executive at Sony, indicate that 2028 is more likely.
It is known that developer CD Projekt Red is also preparing to release the Witcher 4 game in the same period. It is stated that this game could be one of the first games released for the PS6. Although the technical specifications have not yet been officially announced, some expectations have been raised.
It is suggested that a processor based on AMD’s Zen 5 architecture and supporting X3D cache technology will be used in the PS6. This structure aims to increase performance by providing high-speed data access and higher frame rates.
On the graphics side, a new architecture is mentioned. It is stated that a new GPU with UDNA architecture, developed specifically for consoles, will be used instead of RDNA-based graphics units.
